NCUK INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION YEAR (IFY)

The NCUK International Foundation Year (IFY) qualification is specifically catered for international students to provide the skills necessary to succeed at university.

Students who enroll on the IFY qualification can progress to the second year of a bachelor’s degree in the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand or the USA.  The programme is unique which is taught within one year, is assessed through examinations and coursework and incorporates the English for Academic Purposes module.  The EAP course prepares each student for success at UK and worldwide universities by improving reading, writing, listening and speaking – focusing on academic vocabulary and independent study skills.

The IFY programme equips each student with adequate English skills and academic qualifications for studying and living in the UK and other worldwide destinations.

Do I need to take the International Foundation Year?

A foundation qualification is normally required by students who have completed high school outside of the UK education system and/or in a language other than English.

This qualification will help bridge the gap between your local qualification and university study and is designed to give you the academic and English language skills needed to succeed at an international university.

What subjects can I study?

You can choose three academic subjects from the list below depending on which degree you want to study at university. You will also study one of our English for Academic Purposes modules which gives you the academic English language skills needed for university.

Who awards the qualification?

NCUK awards the final certificate. Upon successful completion, you will receive a certificate showing that you have passed the programme and a transcript that details your module results.

Science/ Medicine Pathway

The IFY Science/Medicine pathway is the best route to follow for anyone interested in a science degree. This pathway provides preparation and access to a wide range of science degrees with the inclusion of the chemistry and biology modules. The IFY Science pathway also provides opportunities for students who want to pursue a career in Medicine and Dentistry as a progression option. In addition, studying IFY Science you can be placed on many of the same degrees as the Business, Engineering and Humanities pathways.

Engineering Pathway

The IFY Engineering pathway is designed to prepare students to successfully enter their first year to an undergraduate engineering related degree. The programmes core modules are Physics, Mathematics for Engineering, Chemistry, and English for Academic Purposes (EAP). Teaching is a mixture of lectures, lab work and coursework.

The IFY Business pathway offers a variety of subject areas and a wide range of progression options. This is an ideal pathway for any student who is interested in social sciences and humanities and specific areas such as law and international relations. The IFY Humanities pathway provides access to a wide range of degree programmes within this field. This pathway is aimed at those not wanting to do the math module, even though many of the business and management degrees will be opened as a future choice to any graduate of this programme.

This pathway provides opportunities for any student who has an artistic and creative flair. Students will be able to access a wide range of Art and Design degree courses ranging from Architecture, Graphic Design, Animation, Photography, Interior Design, Fashion plus many more. The syllabus has been designed specifically for international students and will take them through a range of techniques, materials, tools and processes which are designed to match the outcomes of GCE A-level Art and Design modules.
