UFC is the first and only institution in Qatar offering globally recognised foundation qualifications through both NCUK University Pathways and NCC Education. Licensed by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in Qatar, UFC delivers international foundation programmes recognised by over 100 universities across the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the USA, Malaysia, and beyond, offering guaranteed progression to top ranking universities, subject to meeting entry requirements.
The UK National Information Centre (UK ENIC, previously UK NARIC) is the UK government’s official body for the recognition and comparison of international qualifications and skills, managed by Ecctis on behalf of the Department for Education. Following its latest evaluation, Ecctis has confirmed that the NCUK International Foundation Year (IFY) delivered at UFC is academically comparable to secondary education standards across five major international systems:
A-Level standard (United Kingdom)
Advanced Placement standard (United States)
Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) standard
Senior Secondary School Certificate of Education standard (Australia)
Alberta High School Diploma standard (Canada)
This recognition establishes UFC’s International Foundation Year as equivalent to some of the world’s most respected qualifications.Â
The global recognition of the NCUK IFY at UFC allows clear comparisons with other foundation programmes in Qatar, foundation programmes in the UK, and traditional pathways such as A Levels and AP, highlighting why UFC provides a unique and effective route to university.
While some institutions in Qatar offer local foundation programmes focused mainly on academic bridging or basic preparation for university entry, University Foundation College (UFC) delivers internationally recognised, UK accredited qualifications through NCUK University Pathways and NCC Education. These programmes are academically equivalent to the first year of a four year bachelor’s degree. By completing one year at UFC, students complete the equivalent of Year One of a university degree and typically require only three additional years to complete a four year bachelor’s programme, with progression opportunities to over 100 top ranking universities worldwide. This gives students the flexibility to choose from a wide range of universities and destinations based on their academic goals.
In contrast, some other foundation programmes in Qatar that focus mainly on academic preparation or academic bridging are not academically equivalent to the first year of a degree. As a result, students typically progress into a full four year bachelor’s degree at the same institution. These integrated foundation programmes are designed for internal progression, which can limit flexibility for students who later wish to change universities or the degree.

When students explore international qualifications that open doors to leading universities, the NCUK International Foundation Year (IFY) and the U.S. Advanced Placement (AP) often stand out. Both are recognised worldwide and carry strong academic credibility. What sets the IFY apart is its defined pathway, guaranteed progression opportunities, and built-in academic English training, making it a powerful alternative for ambitious students across the globe.
Delivered at University Foundation College (UFC) in Qatar, the NCUK International Foundation Year (IFY) is tailored for students seeking a supportive and globally recognised route to higher education. Independent benchmarking by Ecctis, the UK government’s official body for recognising international qualifications, has confirmed that the IFY is academically comparable to AP, A-Levels, and other respected international systems.

UFC is the ideal starting point for students who aim to study at leading universities or are still exploring their options after high school.
Start your application by clicking the button below. Our admissions team will review your documents and support you with entry requirements, tuition details, available pathways and any required entrance tests.
Once accepted, you will join either the NCUK International Foundation Year or an NCC Education foundation programme. You will complete one year with us in Qatar, then progress directly into the second year of a four-year degree at one of our partner universities in Qatar or abroad.
During your foundation year, we will support you in applying to your preferred universities. You will receive guaranteed conditional offers from UFC’s partner universities across the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the USA, Malaysia and beyond. You may also apply to non-partner universities, although progression in such cases is not guaranteed and is reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Our dedicated university placement team will assist with every step of the application process, whether through UCAS for the UK or direct applications for other countries. We help you write your personal statement, select universities, and prepare for interviews if required.
After the successful completion of your foundation year, you will progress to the second year of a four-year degree or the first year of a three-year undergraduate degree at your preferred university from our network of trusted partner institutions.
A foundation qualification is normally required by students who have completed high school outside of the UK education system and/or in a language other than English. This qualification will help bridge the gap between your local qualification and university study and is designed to give you the academic and English language skills needed to succeed at an international university.
Students from the British curriculum can also join the IFY with IGCSEs or AS Levels. Even if they have not completed 12 years of education, they may still be eligible to enrol. However, in such cases, progression after the IFY may be limited to universities abroad (not in Qatar), and a declaration form must be signed.
The NCUK International Foundation Year (IFY), delivered at University Foundation College, is academically equivalent to three A Levels and is widely accepted by NCUK university partners in the UK and other countries.
We also accept BTEC qualifications as an alternative to GCSEs or AS Levels.
Assessment for each module will be via a combination of coursework and examination. The assessment breakdown is generally 20% coursework and 80% exam.
NCUK qualifications provide access to thousands of degree programmes. The range of programmes available to you will depend on the subjects that you study on the IFY, and on your final grades.
You can use NCUK’s University Course Finder to explore the full range of degree options that NCUK qualifications make available, and the grades you’ll require for access to each.
Yes. After a process of research and selection, supported by our University Application Centre, you can apply through UCAS to UK universities, as well as other universities around the world that require a direct paid application. Each university course will have its own criteria for entry, and your final destination will depend on your grades in the NCUK IFY: the better you do, and the harder you work, the more choice you will have.
Foundation Year at UFC allows you to progress to prestigious universities for the remaining three years of your degree, even if you were not initially accepted due to insufficient qualifications. You can still improve your chances by completing our Foundation Year. Changing degrees or universities after starting your foundation year can be challenging, but our Foundation Year gives you an additional year to determine what you truly want to study in a three-year degree without losing a year. Also, our Foundation Year is often more affordable than the first year at many universities.
