Oregon State University is widely recognised as a leader in sustainability. Through a collaborative effort between Facilities Services and the Sustainability Office, the university has been optimising building heating and cooling systems to reduce energy waste. Since this initiative began in summer 2022, OSU has saved an estimated $215,000 in energy costs and taken meaningful steps toward its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2025.
This process, known as recommissioning, involves evaluating and enhancing existing mechanical and building control systems to improve energy efficiency and better meet the needs of building occupants. Recent projects include the Linus Pauling Science Center, which reduced energy use by $100,000 in its first year after recommissioning, and Nash Hall, which is expected to save approximately $75,000 annually.
