The NCUK International Foundation Year (IFY) prepares international students for entry into the first year of undergraduate degree courses. The NCUK IFY offers you a choice of pathways in Science/Medicine, Engineering, Business, Humanities, Computer Science and Art & Design; each pathway contains a different combination of three subject modules to fit the requirements of your chosen degree.
You will also study NCUK’s ‘English for Academic Purposes’ (EAP) module to improve your language ability and meet the English requirement for admission to your preferred degree programme.
The NCUK International Foundation Year (IFY) is formally recognised by the UK National Information Centre (UK ENIC, formerly UK NARIC), the UK government’s official body for the recognition and comparison of international qualifications, managed by Ecctis on behalf of the UK Department for Education. Following evaluation, Ecctis has confirmed that the IFY delivered at UFC is academically comparable to the A Level standard in the United Kingdom, the Advanced Placement standard in the United States, the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE), the Senior Secondary School Certificate of Education in Australia, and the Alberta High School Diploma in Canada.
NCUK is unique in higher education. NCUK is a consortium of leading universities dedicated to giving international students guaranteed entry to universities worldwide and helping them succeed when they get there. The NCUK is headquartered in Manchester, UK with the study centres across the globe. University Foundation College is the only NCUK partner in Qatar.
With a diverse set of qualifications available as well as opportunities for qualified students to progress directly to university, NCUK supports thousands of students each year on their academic journeys. As our qualifications are recognised by universities from within the NCUK Global Network and beyond, we are able to give students the best start and guarantee access to an NCUK University upon successful completion of their studies with us.
NCUK Guarantee –If you pass your NCUK qualification you are guaranteed a place at an NCUK partner university and have thousands of degree courses to choose from.
Every year students from over 100 nationalities study NCUK programmes:
NCUK qualifications provide access to thousands of degree programmes. The range of programmes available to you will depend on the subjects that you study on the IFY, and on your final grades.
You can use NCUK’s University Course Finder to explore the full range of degree options that NCUK qualifications make available, and the grades you’ll require for access to each.
A foundation qualification is normally required by students who have completed high school outside of the UK education system and/or in a language other than English. This qualification will help bridge the gap between your local qualification and university study and is designed to give you the academic and English language skills needed to succeed at an international university.
Students from the British curriculum can also join the IFY with IGCSEs or AS Levels. Even if they have not completed 12 years of education, they may still be eligible to enrol. However, in such cases, progression after the IFY may be limited to universities abroad (not in Qatar), and a declaration form must be signed.
The NCUK International Foundation Year (IFY), delivered at University Foundation College, is academically equivalent to three A Levels and is widely accepted by NCUK university partners in the UK and other countries.
We also accept BTEC qualifications as an alternative to GCSEs or AS Levels.
Assessment for each module will be via a combination of coursework and examination. The assessment breakdown is generally 20% coursework and 80% exam.
Yes. After a process of research and selection, supported by our University Application Centre, you can apply through UCAS to UK universities, as well as other universities around the world that require a direct paid application. Each university course will have its own criteria for entry, and your final destination will depend on your grades in the NCUK IFY: the better you do, and the harder you work, the more choice you will have.
Foundation Year at UFC allows you to progress to prestigious universities for the remaining three years of your degree, even if you were not initially accepted due to insufficient qualifications. You can still improve your chances by completing our Foundation Year. Changing degrees or universities after starting your foundation year can be challenging, but our Foundation Year gives you an additional year to determine what you truly want to study in a three-year degree without losing a year. Also, our Foundation Year is often more affordable than the first year at many universities.

NCUK’s bespoke English for Academic Purposes (EAP) module is designed specially to develop English language ability for international students. The total tuition fees for the International Foundation Year are QAR 73,000. This includes a non-refundable deposit of QAR 10,000. The fees cover tuition, course materials, and academic support. There will be a non-refundable application fee of QAR 100. Additional fees of QAR 300 each may apply for English and Maths tests if required.
After successfully completing the NCUK International Foundation Year at University Foundation College, students can progress to a wide range of undergraduate degree programmes at partner and non-partner universities worldwide, including destinations such as the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the USA, Malaysia, and beyond.
The IFY is structured around subject pathways that help students build the right academic foundation for their future studies. Each IFY pathway helps students progress to a broad range of relevant degree programmes, depending on academic performance and university entry requirements.
Students can explore the NCUK University Course Finder tool to search for degree programmes at NCUK partner universities worldwide. The tool allows filtering by subject, country, or university, helping students find courses that match their interests and goals.
Yes. University Foundation College has articulation agreements with universities in Qatar. Upon successful completion of the NCUK IFY, eligible students may progress to the second year of four year undergraduate degree programmes at partner universities in Qatar, subject to meeting progression requirements.
A guaranteed university place is available only if specific academic requirements are met. To qualify for guaranteed progression to an NCUK partner university, students must achieve at least 96 NCUK points across their subject modules and a minimum overall grade C in English for Academic Purposes (EAP), with no less than grade D in each EAP skill (Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking). Even if subject module grades are strong, a guaranteed place cannot be offered without meeting the EAP requirements.
The EAP grade is important as it helps students meet English language requirements. An overall grade C in EAP is sufficient for visa purposes. If a student does not meet the required EAP level, an alternative English qualification such as IELTS may be accepted, subject to university requirements.
This guaranteed progression applies to most degree programmes, except Medicine and Dentistry. Entry to all degree programmes is based on the specific entry requirements listed on the NCUK University Course Finder and the individual university website.
Students who achieve between 72 and 88 NCUK points, along with an EAP grade between A and C, may still be considered for progression to a limited number of degree programmes, subject to availability.
A guaranteed place does not apply to Medicine or Dentistry, as these programmes have limited availability and additional entry requirements such as interviews and admissions tests. For further details, please refer to the Study Medicine page on the NCUK website.
Yes. University Foundation College’s Student Placement Team provides dedicated support throughout the university application process. The team works closely with NCUK and its University Application Centre to guide students at every stage, including university selection, degree options, application processes, and progression requirements. Students receive personalised support to help them make informed decisions about studying abroad or continuing locally through UFC’s university partners.
Students do not need to decide their final choice for university before joining University Foundation College. During their studies at UFC, students can explore their preferred degree options and universities. UFC will support them throughout the application process, and students will generally receive conditional offers from universities during the foundation year. Once the conditions are met, a guaranteed place is confirmed.

On successful completion of the IFY, students from both routes can progress to a wide range of universities globally.
